Eating ultra-processed food may shorten life span among older adults

Research presented at the American Society for Nutrition's annual meeting in July 2024 indicates that a diet high in ultra-processed foods can significantly shorten lifespan. Analyzing data from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study, which followed over half a million adults aged 50 to 71 for nearly 23 years, researchers found that individuals consuming large amounts of ultra-processed foods had a 10% higher mortality risk, particularly from heart disease and diabetes. These individuals also exhibited poorer diet quality and higher body mass index, with sugar-sweetened beverages and processed meats being the most commonly consumed ultra-processed items.

Healthy Fact of the Day: Did you know that sleep is just as important for your health as diet and exercise? Getting enough quality sleep helps your body repair itself, boosts your immune system, and enhances cognitive function. In fact, a lack of sleep can lead to weight gain, increased stress, and a higher risk of chronic diseases. So prioritizing those Z’s is key to staying healthy and feeling your best!

Despite retiring, Tom Brady, at 47, remains committed to his fitness as he transitions to his new role as the lead color commentator for NFL on Fox. Recently, he provided insight into his demanding workout regimen, which prominently includes swimming. His swim circuit features:

  • 4x100m Freestyle

  • 4x25m Fast (with 25m recovery)

  • 2x200m Freestyle

But that’s just the beginning! After swimming, Brady moves on to a rigorous strength training session, which includes:

  • 20 Weighted Step-Ups on a plyometric box (with 35-pound weights)

  • 20 Heavy Resistance Band Push-Ups

  • 20 Box Jumps

He tackles this entire circuit an impressive four times! With shirtless workout photos to inspire his fans, Brady’s dedication to fitness showcases his ongoing commitment to health and pushing his limits, whether in the water or on land.
