A study by Mount Sinai researchers has found that wearable devices, such as the Apple Watch, Fitbit, and Oura Ring, can predict inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) flares up to seven weeks in advance. These devices track metrics like heart rate, heart rate variability, physical activity, and oxygenation, which show significant changes before symptoms appear. This early warning could enable individuals with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis to adjust medications or lifestyle factors, potentially preventing severe symptoms. The findings, published in Gastroenterology, suggest that wearable technology might also benefit other inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
