Reducing cholesterol may help reduce bladder cancer's spread, study finds

A recent study has uncovered a potential new approach to treating bladder cancer by targeting a protein called PIN1, which drives cholesterol synthesis in tumor cells. Researchers found that combining a statin (commonly used to lower cholesterol) with a PIN1 inhibitor suppressed tumor growth in both cell and animal models. This discovery highlights the critical role cholesterol plays in cancer cell survival and proliferation. Despite advances in bladder cancer treatments, including immunotherapy, the condition remains challenging due to high recurrence rates and invasive surgical treatments. The study offers a promising avenue for developing therapies that could inhibit tumor growth more effectively and reduce reliance on current intensive treatments. Researchers are now exploring PIN1’s broader implications in other cancers and its interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Healthy Fact of the Day: Your gut is home to around 70% of your immune system.
